What is your Outer Voice? It’s the public-facing version of your inner voice — specifically your creative and artistic voice. It’s what separates you from other artists, it’s what attracts your audience to you.

I also work in brand identity and consulting. In the branding world, what I call voice would be a slaw of things like differentiators, core values, brand voice, brand identity and messaging.

But, even in this craven, influencer-driven age, I don’t see artists as “brands.” We’re people. We’re humans. Individuals and collectives.

Audiences are drawn to brands because they’re drawn to personalities. Your personality is intertwined with your work, no matter what that work is. Why? Because it’s connected to what’s important to you, whether that’s human rights, storytelling or really great beats.

Finding your voice, finding how it’s different from everyone else, is the first step to cultivating your audience. Maintaining that voice, growing it and sustaining it, that leads to growing and sustained audiences.

Throughout this site, you’ll see interviews with artists who have established their own distinct voice. I try to draw out how they found it and what they can share with you.

I hope you have fun. I am.
